Fundraiser to Support Kevin Dugas

Nov 10th, 2011 by admin | Comments Off

Lagniappe Productions is organizing a “FRIENDS OF KEVIN DUGAS KREWE”.  Kevin, the long time drummer for Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, recently suffered a very serious injury almost severing two of the  fingers on his left hand.  Like most of the musicians in southwest Louisiana and those playing roots music in general, Kevin does not have medical insurance.  Kevin was rushed to a hospital in New Orleans, but without insurance, was turned away and was told that he had to wait for eight days before he could be operated on by a hand surgeon.  After a long and painful delay, Kevin had his surgery on Friday, November 4.  His fingers were successfully reattached and now Kevin faces a long, arduous and painful recovery and rehabilitation.  None of us know how long it’s going to take before Kevin’s back on the drum throne slamming the beat that makes the Mamou Playboys the hardest driving dance band from Louisiana. In the meantime, Kevin has no insurance and no means of income. Kevin is married and has three kids, 2 teenage boys and a young  preteen girl. With the holidays just around the corner, times are looking pretty tough for Kevin and his family this winter.  So, Lagniappe Productions, has organized the “FRIENDS OF KEVIN DUGAS KREWE”. The purpose of this KREWE is to raise some much needed funds for Kevin and his family.  We will run this Krewe up and through the Mardi Gras Ball at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet on February 18, 2012.  At that time, we will disband the Krewe and celebrate by having some special T-Shirts for certain members of the Krewe and we will be giving away special 2012 Festival Packages also. ( Details to follow later). You maydonate below, or send a check to Lagniappe Productions, 51 White Oak Court, Wakefield RI 02879 on his behalf (please clearly note your check with Friends of Kevin Dugas on the memo line)

Rhythm & Roots Returns to Ninigret in 2009!

Feb 9th, 2009 by chuck | 0

ANNUAL RHYTHM & ROOTS FESTIVAL WILL RETURN TO
NINIGRET PARK IN CHARLESTOWN, RI FOR 2009!

After much uncertainty due to proposed changes by the Town Council, the annual Rhythm & Roots Festival is confirmed to return to Ninigret Park in Charlestown, RI for 2009.  Festival producers had begun to explore other sites to hold the annual festival which annually has drawn approximately 10,000 patrons to Charlestown each Labor Day weekend for the past 10 years.

Proposed was a change from a flat fee schedule to a percentage of the gate plus a stipulation by the town to audit the books of event producers of all of the major events held annually in the park.  Those included the Charlestown Seafood Festival, The Big Apple Circus and the Ocean State Reggae Festival in addition to Rhythm & Roots.

With a recent change in the makeup of the members of the Town Council, Rhythm & Roots producers, Chuck Wentworth and Mary Doub found a group that was willing to work with the events held in the park and who understood the potential impact of the economy on the festival’s survival.  According to Wentworth, in the past year, Rhythm & Roots has lost its four major sponsors and are in the process of searching out some new sponsors to help finance the future of the festival.

As of January 26th Rhythm & Roots along with the two other Ninigret Park events have agreed to a small increase of $500 in fees for 2009.  In the coming months all three will be negotiating with the Parks & Recreation Department and Town Council for a 3 year contract that will be fair to all parties.
